The best SEO keyword for a car dealership is "used cars" plus your city name. We know because it put dealer websites in front of buyers 27,772 times in the last 90 days across 35 independent dealerships whose Google Search Console data we manage.
Every list below comes from that same data: 686,626 real searches, May through August 2026, across 35 independent used car dealers. We stripped out dealership names, so this is pure discovery behavior: how buyers search when they do not know you yet.
That matters because every other "best car dealer keywords" page on Google is a brainstorm. Someone sat down and guessed what buyers might type, or asked a keyword tool that averages the whole country. This list is what buyers did type, on real dealer websites, ranked by how often Google showed those dealers for it.
How to read the list: {city} stands for your town, because "used cars durham" and "used cars asheville" are the same buyer behavior with a different map pin. {$} is a dollar amount and {st} is a state. Swap in your own and you have your keyword set.

WE CAN GET YOU RANKED!
SEO WebsitesNotice the list has both "used cars {city}" and "{city} used cars." A keyword brainstorm would never include both word orders. Real buyers type both, so both are on the list, and Google reports them separately.
Notice also what dominates: buy here pay here. It shows up four times in the top 25, and it is the number one way buyers in this dataset go looking for an independent dealer. If you offer in-house financing and your website does not have a real buy here pay here page, you are sitting out the biggest game in town. Every website we build has one.
Top 10 "Near Me" Keywords That Drive Traffic to Your Website
The list above tells you what to build pages for. This one is different. These are the highest-converting keywords in the data: the "near me" searches, ranked by the traffic they delivered across those same 35 dealerships.
| 1 | used cars near me |
| 2 | used car dealerships near me |
| 3 | buy here pay here near me |
| 4 | car dealerships near me |
| 5 | dealerships near me |
| 6 | car lots near me |
| 7 | used trucks for sale near me |
| 8 | cars for sale near me |
| 9 | used car lots near me |
| 10 | trucks for sale near me |
Ranked by the traffic they brought dealer websites over 90 days.
A buyer who types "near me" has stopped researching and started driving. They skip the city name and let Google pick the location because they are going today.
And here is the part most dealers miss: we are not telling you to build pages for these keywords. Search any of them and look at what Google gives you. The map pack comes up first, three dealerships on a map, before a single regular result. The clicks in this list flowed through the Google Business Profiles on that map, not through anyone's homepage.
You do not win "near me" with your website alone. You win it with your Google Business Profile.
That makes this table the strongest argument in the whole dataset for optimizing your Google Business Profile. The map pack ranks profiles, not websites: categories, reviews, photos, hours, and the signals that tie the profile to the site behind it. The highest-converting searches in the market are decided on the map, which is why ongoing Google Business Profile work is in our automotive SEO plans from the $150 tier up.

Daily Automotive SEO TipsThe numbers buyers type: $5,000, $10,000, and $500 down
The dollar figures inside these searches are remarkably consistent. Two price caps rule: "under $5,000" and "under $10,000," in nearly equal volume. The next figure on the list, $3,000, gets less than a tenth of either.
On down payments there is no contest. Buyers search "$500 down" more than fifteen times as often as "$1,000 down."
So when your inventory pages and your ads name a price, name these. A page titled "Used Cars Under $5,000 in {city}" speaks the buyer's exact language. A page titled "Affordable Pre-Owned Vehicles" speaks nobody's.
The keywords you should not chase
Year-make-model searches like "2018 Silverado 1500 for sale" generated 224,130 impressions in this dataset, more than any other search family. But a buyer searching one specific vehicle clicks CarGurus, Autotrader, and Carfax when the results load, because those sites have 400 Silverados and you have two.
This is the trap most dealer website templates are built into: the whole site is optimized for exactly one thing, the literal vehicles in stock, which is the one fight you cannot win. Meanwhile the searches in the two tables above, the ones where a buyer is looking for a dealer, go to whoever bothered to build pages for them.
That is the entire reason our Optimized Websites exist. The vehicle pages are there, but so are the buy here pay here page, the price-point pages, the body style pages, and the local pages that win the searches in the tables above.
What to do with this list
A keyword list does nothing on its own. Each keyword needs a page worth ranking: a real page with real content aimed at that search, not the keyword pasted into a footer. The full playbook is in our SEO guide for car dealerships, and the short version is:
- Pick the keywords from table 1 that match what you sell, swap in your city, and make sure a page on your site answers each one.
- Get your Google Business Profile in shape, because table 2 says the buyers closest to purchase search "near me," and that fight happens on the map.
- Put $5,000 and $500 down on the pages and ads where a price belongs.
- Do not spend another dollar optimizing for year-make-model searches you cannot win.
Or have us do it. Our automotive SEO plans start at $150 a month and build one of these pages every month, on your site, under your name, along with the Google Business Profile work. One dealer we run this for went from 83 Google clicks to 700 year over year; the case study has the Search Console screenshots.
